DOES THE JOB!

Haringvlietbrug

The Haringvliet bridge is on the A29 motorway and connects the Hoekse Waard with Goeree-Overflakkee via the Hellegats dam and with mainland North Brabant via the bridge over the Volkerak locks. Commissioned in 1964, the 1220-metre-long bridge has a fixed section of about one kilometre and a movable valve and bascule basement. In 2023, the movable part will reach the end of its technical lifespan and will therefore be renovated. Renovation of the fixed part of the bridge will follow after 2025.

MNE contribution

The old valve of the Haringvliet Bridge will be removed after almost sixty years of service. Using three floating trestles, the valve, also known as the bridge trap, with an impressive weight of 1,860,000 kg, was lifted out. The process of lifting out the old bridge valve was in collaboration with Bonn & Mees Floating Derricks BV and HEBO.

Floating cranes
The approximately 1800-tonne fall of the bridge was hoisted out by three floating cranes and ferried to MNE’s demolition site in Krimpen aan den IJssel. The scrapping of these parts was taken care of by MNE.

Project under time pressure
A great project, but under time pressure due to the planned opening of the motorway. A big project like this, involving many parties and working along and above the water, brings challenges and risks. ‘Marc says the project is going smoothly. ‘I am proud of how our employees are taking up this work.’
