DOES THE JOB!

Hemweg – Unit 08 Amsterdam

Contribution MNE

MNE, in combination with Lek Sloopwerken and Vermeulen Contractors, is demolishing the Elektriciteitscentrale – Hemweg 8 in the Amsterdam port area. The demolition work started in 2022 and will last until mid-2026.

Since 2022, the coal conveyor belts and a number of outbuildings have been demolished. The coal conveyors transported coal from the Overslagbedrijf Amsterdam (OBA) over a length of 1,100 meters to the plant’s storage yard. There the coal went over another few hundred meters of conveyor belt to the boiler house.

Demolition of chimney and boiler room

Demolition of the 175-meter-high chimney will begin in 2025. The adjacent boiler house and machine hall will be demolished throughout 2024 and 2025. Both structures have been prepared for this in recent months. In order for this to go as smoothly as possible, residual materials have been removed in recent months. These include substances such as asbestos, coal dust and waste water sludge. Many installations have also already been removed.

Demolish/reuse in a smart and responsible way

Significant amounts of iron, debris and residual materials are released during site demolition. 98% of all released materials are recycled, such as:

  • 30,000 tons of ferrous and non ferrous metals
  • 1,900 tons of gypsum
  • 2,800 tons of fly ash
  • 850 tons of various mixed residues
  • 40 tons of ion exchange resins
  • 260 tons of miscellaneous oils
  • 1,500 tons of waste water sludge
  • 504 catalyst packages
  • 40 m3 of abandoned paperwork

The plant’s generator has been given a second life in South Africa.
